It was not an easy time in America for gay men to congregate with fellow gay men. They hosted parties, bar nights, leather “runs” (weekend outings) and fundraisers for gay and AIDS service groups. I served the Club in various offices, including President. Today, they are known as the One Archives Foundation at the USC Libraries, a respectful national repository of LGBT history.
Rain or shine, we always have a great time on our runs.
The Satyrs was not the first gay & lesbian organization, that was the Mattachine Society formed in 1950. Our diverse membership hails mostly from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia and is composed of seasoned as well as novice riders from all walks of life and professions.
Our goal is to promote motorcycle safety and education, and we strive to ensure that all of our rides and events are conducted on safe and legal machinery, following all applicable laws and regulations.
They follow in the footsteps of men who are sadly gone but whose memory we still cherish.
We are Riders who Love to Camp
Hey you! Come ride with us.
Join our vibrant community of gay motorcycle enthusiasts! These “patch” clubs, named after the patch or colors that members wore on their leather vests, were patterned after “outlaw” motorcycle clubs like the Hell’s Angels.
Since our founding, the Satyrs have been a gay men’s motorcycle club welcoming men of all backgrounds. The commonality that binds us is the love of motorcycling and the enjoyment that comes from touring some of the best roads for motorcycling in Canada and the USA—all in a spirit of friendship and safety.
From May through October, we host a run and campout weekend monthly, as well as day rides and socials (meet and greets) in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver BC.
Whether you prefer a short day ride, a 2-3 day ride and campout, or an extended trip with a small group, you will find an event to fit your riding style and ability. Gay leathermen gladly went through the rigorous pledge period to join one of the clubs and avoid the stigma of being a GDI, a “god-damned independent.” Like the late John Preston, they knew that the clubs satisfied “gay men’s need to bond in groups.”
During their golden age, roughly the late 70s and 80s, gay bike clubs were active in both the leather scene and in the “mainstream” LGBTQ community.
Formed in 1954 during the height of the McCarthy era, seven men came together, bonded by the love of the motorcycle to form a club. All motorcycles must be capable of freeway speeds and be in good running condition. By 1976 the Thebans were important enough to be one of the cofounders of the Dade County Coalition for Human Rights.

When the weather cools down, we keep the fun going with our monthly meetings. Clubs like Saber MC were true brotherhoods for those who us who were members. They reorganized again 3 years later with a few rough starts as the One Society. Our members are committed to respect and inclusion.
To join us, simply reach out to one of our members for an invitation. Join us for a unique and unforgettable journey, where you can meet like-minded people and discover the beauty of the Pacific Northwest on two wheels.

The Satyrs Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles
Who We Are...
The Satyrs Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles is the oldest running gay men’s motorcycle club and organization in the world.
According to a survivor, “by the time the nineties had started, drugs, and specifically crystal meth, had already been a specific element to the culture of sex parties, particularly among the FFA [a fetish club devoted to fisting].
