Sure, Matthew, on the surface, needs Oliver and his fame more than Oliver needs him, but Oliver clearly feels most famous when he has someone worshiping him in his orbit. Her latest isn’t just nodding to girlhood cult classics but claiming that place for itself for a new generation of queer and trans film fans. Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of Stephen King’s brutal novel approaches its dystopian death march with a kaleidoscopic sensitivity that’s attuned to the private fears, bonds, and longings of the young men facing extermination.

Benny makes some terrible mistakes over the season, especially when he hurts best friend Carmen (a great Wally Baram) time and time again, but the show is gentle with him as he figures himself — and his love of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” — out. The being he now calls his friend is a spirit that has taken his form — with Yoshiki’s voice, too — and one that will kill him if he tells anyone the truth.

That tension — of who really values the other more — makes the film much more unsettled than its premise initially suggests, while committed performances from Pellerin and Madekwe give the duo a sexual charge that’s discomforting and alluring in equal measures. In a year filled with movies where queer people were acting horribly, none were quite as detestable, and also scarily recognizable, as the gays in “Twinless.” —WC

  • “Viet and Nam”

    It’s reductive and even unhelpful to compare the work of one contemporary South Asian filmmaker to another, but Vietnamese auteur on the rise Trương Minh Quý brings to mind Thai queer director Apichatpong Weerasethakul in the best possible ways with his gorgeously composed third feature, “Viet and Nam.” Locating gay desire in the only furtive corners where it can bloom in a hegemonic civilization, “Viet and Nam” is in part the story of two male coal miners who fall in love among the soot and ruins (and with eroticism boiling over in those scenes despite the movie’s hushed, at times statically arranged shots).

    Anyhow, they find themselves falling for the little guy and amid a busy holiday season at their co-owned biz, they navigate the foster system in hopes of keeping him.

    Initially announced as a Lifetime movie called The Firefighter’s Christmas Wish with a TBD premiere date, this hotly anticipated lesbian firehouse film will actually debut on the W Network in Canada, with a U.S.

    launch date still up in the air. As we look ahead to another uncertain year, let’s hope for projects that don’t just assert queerness as a worthy influence in art but frame it as an essential channel for endurance, creativity, and unique perspective in storytelling — where everyone still matters. Steven’s mother, the mysterious Rose Quartz (Broadway star Susan Egan), kept her fair share of secrets, and many of them come back to Earth for Steven and the Gems to face.

      Ethan Hawke isn’t the first choice you would think of to play an embittered, messy bisexual — one who is several inches shorter than his lanky build, nonetheless — but somehow the actor nails it in “Blue Moon,” a biopic of acclaimed lyricist Lorenzo Hart from Hawke’s frequent collaborator Richard Linklater.

      Valerie O’Connor is returning as Sarah’s lesbian friend, Bridget Patterson.

    Stranger Things, Season 5B & 5C // December 25 & 31 // Netflix

    Rent (2005)

    If you're a musical theater geek, chances are you are probably very aware of this movie.

    Season 17 arrived amid revived political hostility toward trans and gender-nonconforming people. But like… why would they make that up? It’s hornier, witchier, and emotionally messier in all the right ways, and filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay’s purple-hued bisexual romance blends girl-on-girl obsession, occult power, and pop-fed fantasy into a frothy queer brew that treats desire with magic and menace.

    Every element of the film, from the costume design to the music, reflects the shifting nature of Alike’s identity, and it’s beautiful to watch her come into her own.
