There are movies made in the United States and various other countries and in various languages. They meet again at the wedding of Mindy's now grown daughter over a decade later, and reconnect and reflect on their night together and what it meant. There are few sites that list lesbian movie titles, and it still takes a bit of trial and error to find free, full-length, movies, with lesbian characters and with an obvious lesbian storyline throughout the duration of the movie.

It’s Lesbian Visibility Week!!!

In 2023, I first shared with you 10 Lesbian Films to Watch for Lesbian Visibility Week.

In 2020's Happiest Season, Stewart stars as the very anti-Christmas Abby, who's visiting the family of her girlfriend Harper for the first time. During their getaway, the two women realize they have hidden feelings for each other, which results in a period of avoidance and awkwardness. Over the course of the summer, Cyd falls for a local nonbinary barista named Katie (Ro White), and she and her aunt gradually bring out new sides of each other.

Stud Life (2012)

Set in London’s Black queer scene, Stud Life follows butch photographer JJ (T’Nia Miller) as she falls for a femme woman named Elle who may be guarding several secrets.

Interestingly, it was originally celebrated during July in West Hollywood from 1990-92. The historical romance centres on Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a young painter hired to do a marriage portrait of a noblewoman named Heloise (Adèle Haenel), only to fall in love with Heloise herself.

Princess Cyd (2017)

When headstrong teenager Cyd’s (Jessie Pinnick) parents send her away to spend the summer with her aunt Miranda (Rebecca Spence), an author of religious books, they’re probably not anticipating a summer of queer sexual awakening for their teenage daughter — but life rarely follows a plan.

Director Emma Seligman's 2020 debut centers around a bisexual Jewish teen named Danielle (Rachel Sennott) reluctantly attending a family shiva, where she's quickly thrown into the awkward scenario of being stuck in the same house as her ex-girlfriend (portrayed by a pre-The Bear Molly Gordon) and her current sugar daddy and his wife (Danny Deferrari and Dianna Agron).

There are not an overwhelming number of them, but they do exist.

Mosquita y Mari (2012)

At first glance, teenagers and new neighbors Mosquita (Fenessa Pineda) and Mari (Venecia Troncoso) couldn’t be more different.

4.

When part of our community suffers, we all do.

In honor of Pride Month, we’ve put together a list of the very best WLW films we could literally watch over and over again, and no, Blue Is The Warmest Colour did not make the cut.

Check out our ranking below!

6. The time period of the film becomes a character in and of itself, permeating the costumes, sets, props, and politics of this heartbreakingly hopeful love story between a divorcée and a shop girl, two unlikely lovers who overcome daunting obstacles to pursue a relationship together.

Telling the story of painter Marianne who is hired to create a portrait of aristocratic Héloïse for her Milanese future husband, it reinforces the idea that the intensity of a relationship is not equivalent to it’s duration.

2. So this time, I want to focus on different lesbian films – ones that you may not be aware of.

But first, let’s take a step back… what IS Lesbian Visibility Week?

Lesbian Visitbility Week is an entire week dedicated to celebrating lesbians and promoting solidarity with all LGBTQ women and non-binary folks in the queer community.

All seems the normal amount of insufferable until Abby realizes that Harper isn't yet out to her family, a secret that ends up taking over the holiday and almost tearing the couple apart. Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy and Alison Brie also star.

Bound (1996)

Long before we knew them as queer women, the Wachowskis made an indelible contribution to the sapphic film canon with their directorial debut, Bound, a heist movie featuring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as a pair of lovers getting ready to make a run for it.

So it’s vital that we ALL stand together and support each other, especially when current politics are working against some of us.

Thankfully, there are a handful of folks who ARE the perfect role models to look towards for answers, the ideal support, and more. Portrait Of A Lady On Fire

The winner of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Queer Palm award, written and directed by Céline Sciamma, made us all wish we had paid better attention in French class.

Her mother (Kim Wayans) and father (Charles Parnell) are, respectively, hostile and indifferent; her friendship with her openly lesbian best friend, Laura (Pernell Walker), is complicated by Laura’s own feelings for her. Many of the lesbian films, shorts, and series on Lesflicks are also EXCLUSIVE to Lesflicks – you won’t find them anywhere else.

Adapted from the Emily M. Danforth novel of the same name by Appropriate Behavior director Desiree Akhavan, the film is a tender, earnest, beautifully shot examination of the torture routinely inflicted on queer kids in the name of “fixing” them.
