No, Spongebob is not gay. Rather, he clarified that SpongeBob and Patrick Star are partially asexual, a characteristic that several real-life sponge species have in common.
On May 1, 1999, Nickelodeon introduced the world to SpongeBob SquarePants, a lovable sea sponge living in a pineapple under the sea.

One person tweeted, "A lot of people are saying 'Spongebob is asexual according to Stephen Hillenburg' and I just wanna point out that would still make him queer, aces are queer, he can be a gay ace, he’s allowed to wear the rainbow too guys."

Perhaps SpongeBob wasn't initially intended to be gay — but it certainly seems Nickelodeon is suggesting the beloved cartoon character could be, after all.

In news that will perhaps be unsurprising to many, Nickelodeon just appeared to make the announcement that the beloved children's TV character SpongeBob SquarePants is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.
The network marked Pride month with a post on Twitter, stating that it was "Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month," accompanied by artwork of SpongeBob, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra, all in rainbow-tinted hues.
Korra is canonically queer within the world of Avatar, having embarked on an explicitly romantic on-screen relationship with her best friend, Asami Sato.
The scene resembled a same-sex couple raising a child.
Academic articles and cultural commentators have also weighed in on SpongeBob’s representation.
(He is getting his own spinoff, so who knows? Or at least that's what a tweet from Nickelodeon seems to suggest.

In actuality, the character appeared in a televised music video to teach kids about multiculturalism — the video contained neither a pledge nor any mentions of sexual identity.
However, the speculation about SpongeBob’s sexual was furthered when anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) responded to Nickelodeon’s 2020 Pride month tweet, writing, “Enough of the craziness with Spongebob….
